Our Origin:
-
We, Jerry Cripe and Nancy Lewis, created
Greibhaus Instruments in 1998. Jerry began building instruments in 1984 and has over 20 years experience
building harps, hammered and mountain dulcimers and
psalteries. Originally his business was known as Teachers
Pet Dulcimers.
In searching for a new
name, we thought of many local landmarks that might lend
themselves
to a name. Rock Creek, Sugar Creek, Pleasant Hill, Sangamon
Valley and Hickory Grove were only a few of the
possibilities considered. I also thought about trying to
identify with the unique sweet sound of the dulcimer and
considered Dulcimer Sounds, Sweet Music and Enchanting
Melodies as possibilities. However, I wanted to have a name
that stood for quality and something that reflected the
origins of our small home owned business. I eventually
decided to call on my interest in family history and Greibhaus was the result. Jacob Greib was the original
immigrant for my family. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1733.
Add to that the German word for house which is haus and you
have Greibhaus.. Thus, Greibhaus represents the
craftsmanship and quality of work done in the house of Greib.
Our Goal:
- Our goal is to create better
quality and better sounding musical instruments by combining
the modern thinking of science and technology with the
traditional art and craftsmanship of instrument building.
