Tennessee Music Box
Tennessee Music Box:
Most authorities on the Mountain
Dulcimer credit it origins to the Scheitholt, a zither type
instrument found in colonial Pennsylvania. Each region of
Appalachia seems to have taken that basic instrument and added
their own style and characteristics. In Virginia the instrument
took the single bout shape common to the teardrop. In Kentucky
it took the double bout shape or hourglass design. In south
central Tennessee, the instrument retained its rectangular shape
and became known as a Tennessee Music Box. Its simple lines and
big, deep soundbox produce a beautiful sounding instrument with
a strong, rich voice.
Greibhaus Instrument now introduces our own version. We retain
our quality and craftsmanship with instrument made of
bookmatched solid wood, F shape soundholes and soundboard made
of spruce, western cedar or redwood. Action is low to make an
instrument that is easy to fret with no sore fingers and geared
tuners to provide easy tuning that stays tuned.
We offer three options:
♫Option 1 has a soundbox that is 3" x 8" x 33" with a 27 inch
vibrating string length (fretboard). Basic wood is walnut or
cherry but other options are available at extra cost. Ask about
our recycled American Chestnut. Limited supply available.
♫Option 2 has a soundbox that is 3" x 8" x 34" with a 26 inch
vibrating string length. This version however has a floating
bridge which produces an even stronger richer sound.
♫Option 3 is smaller. Soundbox is 2" x 7" x 27" and has a 21
inch vibrating string length. This smaller size makes an
excellent instrument for children or those of us who have
smaller hands and shorter fingers. It still has the standard DAd
or DAa tuning.
Be sure to ask about specialty woods for the soundbox,
soundboard or fretboard.
